This project addresses real-world challenges through innovative and reciprocal partnerships that support social and economic development. Through graduate studies and research opportunities at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), scholars gain advanced knowledge and skills in priority areas including STEM, climate action, governance and administration.
The project aims to increase the equitable participation of women and men in the labour market, with a particular focus on supporting women’s success in academia and professional careers. Scholars are paired with faculty mentors at TMU and partner institutions in South Africa, who work together to support their academic, professional and leadership development. Through individualized “Back Home” plans, scholars identify career goals that align with labour market needs and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their home countries.
In addition to academic training, scholars benefit from career-readiness opportunities such as networking, professional skills workshops and one-on-one mentoring. Targeted support helps address barriers to women’s participation in higher education and the workforce. Funding is also available for career development activities, including conference participation, research publication, guest lectures, industry engagement and membership in professional associations. Together, these experiences equip scholars to become leaders, innovators and changemakers in their fields and communities.
