The University of Manitoba (UM) and University of Nairobi (UoN) have collaborated in infectious disease/medical microbiology since 1979. The objective of this program is to provide UoN trainees with the skills needed to address identified gaps in Kenya’s health sciences (medical microbiology) workforce.

The project is composed of two elements. The first is a full four-year PhD program undertaken at the UM Department of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (MMID). In this element, a pool of eligible students is identified by the UoN Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) and the names sent to UM MMID faculty members who will interview each individual (remotely) and select three (at least two of whom must be women) to come to the UM MMID for full-time PhD study. The second element (using the same process) is a six-month or one-year research internship for five scholars, at least three of whom must be women.
